Never For Me
never for me| 20x16in. acrylic on wooden panel - this painting is what began my love of painting last year and stands as my only acrylic painting. i’ll definitely make an oil version of this painting someday.
this painting was inspired by the book/game ‘i have no mouth and i must scream’. i did this back in the fall so i find it funny that it's having a moment on tiktok right now, and deservedly so.
when reading the story years ago, i felt a weird kinship with the character of am. feeling like an outsider and feeling stripped of the ability to enjoy the things that make life and existence worth it. now clearly that wasn't true for me and i’m much better now. but I still can't help but be moved by am’s longing during his iconic speech in the book. this feels like a good time for me to acknowledge that am is the villain in this book and his actions are not justified. media literacy and all of that.
i also reckoned with the loss of and regaining my emotions around the time i learned of the book as well.
“for i was flesh, and you were machine”
